Prof. Christopher Tremewan: In 2011,DrTremewan was elected Secretary General of APRU which consists of the 45 leading research universities of the APEC economies.
Until June 2011, DrTremewan was the Vice-President (International) of the University of Auckland, New Zealand.
He holds bachelor and master’s degrees in social anthropology from the University of Auckland,a Ph.D. in political science (on Southeast Asian politics) from the University of Canterbury, and a master’s degree in public administration from Harvard University.
He was a visiting professor at Peking University in 2007 � 2008, and a visiting fellow at Georgetown University of Washington, D.C. in 2003. He was elected a senior associate member of St. Antony’s College, Oxford University, in September 1991 and again in 2004. His most well-known book, The Political Economy of Social Control in Singapore, was completed while at Oxford and published in the St. Antony’s- Macmillan series and by St. Martin’s Press, New York in 1994 and a paperback edition published in 1996.
In 1995 he became the founding director of the New Zealand Asia Institute, which he led until 1999. Previously, he held positions as a senior consultant, executive secretary, and research director for international development organisations based in Hong Kong, Singapore and Tokyo, respectively.
A specialist on social regulation in Southeast Asia, his research has recently focused on internationalisation and diversity, national growth strategies and the politicization of ethnicity. Currently, he is a member of an EU-funded collaborative research project on the globalization of higher education.
Until his appointment to head APRU, DrTremewan was a member of the Board of Education New Zealand and an Advisory Trustee of the Chinese Language Foundation. He was the founder of the Cambodia Trust (NZ) and Chair of the New Zealand Advisory Committee of the New Zealand Centre at Peking University. He has been chair of the NZ Labour Party Policy Committee on Foreign Affairs and Security. |
